Battle of Wits is back. After a gap I brought the MTG quiz show back for season two, with a fresh set of rounds and a new house rule: this season is just about having fun as we go, no big end of season showdown.
The contestants
A returning face and two new ones: Cayce back for another go, Commander Mechanic (Chris), and cosplayer and streamer ZBexx, flying the flag for Legacy against a table of Commander players.
The rounds
Some familiar rounds and a couple of new ones:
- Tiny Leaders: guess the commander from de-pixelating art. Cayce turned out to be frighteningly good at recognising art, less so at what the cards actually do.
- Honorific: I pitch names for a new legendary creature and you tell me which existing card I'm accidentally copying.
- Counters mythic round: twelve counter types, eleven that a card can make and one that can't.
- Journey to Nowhere: name the character I've removed from a piece of art.
- Tentative Connection: four things linked by a hidden thread, including a nasty one about the Storm Scale.
- Showcase: twelve cards, one imposter frame to spot.
- Now I Know My ABCs: a quickfire finish where I show a phrase with the vowels stripped out.
How it went
Show the result (spoilers)
The quickfire round blew the scores wide open and we ended on a first for the show: a tie. Cayce and Chris both finished on 12 to share first, with ZBexx on 1 but having a great time throughout. A fun way to kick off the new season.
